Read the Editorial PolicyGround screw pile installation should be managed as a sequence of release decisions, not as one equipment operation. The site team needs an approved product and layout, verified access and underground-service controls, a defined installation method, a qualified equipment and measurement chain, pile-by-pile records, and an authorized route for refusal, damage or deviation. Only then can a pile or lot be released for follow-on work. The exact machine, torque, depth, termination criteria, tolerances and test program are project-specific. This guide helps EPC field managers and QA engineers build hold points and evidence. It does not replace the foundation design, product instructions, site method statement, inspection and test plan, local safety rules or statutory approval.
Release the site and design baseline before mobilization
An installation crew cannot convert an unresolved design into an accepted foundation. Before plant approaches the first location, freeze the documents and conditions that control the work: approved pile schedule and layout, head interface, current ground information, product designation, installation procedure, inspection and test plan (ITP), acceptance criteria, access route, working platform and responsible authorities.
The East Baoyu screw-pile product page keeps installation criteria tied to the approved method statement and test plan. It also states that catalog examples are not a project pile schedule. That boundary should remain visible on site: the pile mark, location, drawing revision and acceptance route must agree before installation starts.
The following release gate is an original East Baoyu field-control tool. Replace its generic labels with the project documents, roles and signatures that actually apply.

FHWA's Acceptance Procedures for Structural Foundations describes acceptance as a framework built from project requirements, inspection, testing and information collected during construction. Its examples address transportation foundations rather than ground screws, but the control lesson transfers: acceptance needs actual construction evidence, not only an intended design (FHWA GEC 15).
Qualify the equipment, tooling and measurement chain
There is no universal installation machine or torque value for every ground screw. The product, soil, required embedment, access, alignment control, headroom and approved installation criteria determine the equipment route. Record the proposed plant and tooling in the method statement, then verify that what arrives on site matches the released configuration.
Installation remains the responsibility of the appointed site contractor unless the applicable contract states otherwise. Supplier manuals or remote support do not replace the contractor's plant selection, competent supervision, local safety controls or project approvals.

Do not treat calibration as a sticker-only check. Confirm that the measuring range, units, resolution, current status and link to the actual tool are suitable for the project criterion. If data are manually transcribed, preserve the raw source and identify who made and checked the entry.
Control ground screw pile installation through hold points
A generic sequence—set out, align, rotate, finish—is too weak for project control. The released procedure should identify the evidence and authority at each transition. It should also distinguish an ordinary observation from a hold point that stops work until a named party accepts the next step.
At the start, confirm the pile identity against the location plan and inspect its condition. Establish the initial location, elevation and inclination reference. During installation, observe and record only the parameters required by the approved procedure—such as depth, time, alignment and torque where applicable. Stop at defined criteria or an abnormal event. Complete extensions, couplings, heads or post-installation adjustments only by the released detail, then perform the required as-installed checks.
ICC-ES AC358 is relevant where an ICC-ES evaluation route for helical pile systems and devices is adopted. It reinforces the need for system descriptions, installation information and defined evaluation conditions, but it is not a universal specification for every ground screw project and does not imply that East Baoyu holds a particular evaluation report (ICC-ES AC358). The project must identify its own governing product instructions, code and approval route.
Give every pile a traceable installation history
A daily summary cannot reconstruct what happened at one disputed location. Give every pile a stable ID and one installation history that connects the issued design, physical product, site event, measurement files, deviations, tests and final disposition.

Keep raw instrument files as well as approved summaries. Use consistent units and time references. If a record is corrected, retain the original entry, reason, author and approval rather than overwriting the history.
Installation torque can be a useful process observation, but it is not stand-alone proof of capacity. A project that uses a torque-capacity relationship needs an approved product-, equipment-, ground- and test-specific basis with stated limits. Route refusal, damage and out-of-tolerance conditions
An exception is not a field instruction. It is a recorded condition awaiting an authorized decision. The method statement should define who may stop work, who makes the technical disposition, who accepts quality records and who releases a changed location or method.
Stop and record when the pile meets refusal or an abnormal torque pattern under the project definition; alignment moves outside the released tolerance; the shaft, helix, coupling, head or coating is damaged; unexpected fill, voids, water, obstruction or rock is encountered; the wrong pile or tool is present; measurement data are lost; or the location approaches a protected service or exclusion boundary.
Protect the location and capture enough evidence to diagnose the event: pile and grid ID, time, current depth/elevation, recent process data, photographs where permitted, product condition, ground observations and operator comments. Then route the record to the named designer/geotechnical authority and QA responsibility. The approved response may be to continue under a revised criterion, investigate, test, extract, replace, relocate, repair or reject. Do not improvise predrilling, cutting, welding, straightening, repeated cycling or relocation merely because production is waiting. Each action can change the design, durability, evidence or interface basis.
FHWA GEC 15 emphasizes comparing actual conditions and construction observations with the intended foundation and resolving nonconforming or unforeseen conditions through the project acceptance process. The project's own contract, design and ITP remain controlling.
Separate production records from load testing
An installation record and a load-test report answer different questions. The production record shows how one pile was installed against released process criteria. A load test measures the response of a defined test element under a defined loading method and setup. One does not automatically replace the other.
The test plan should state the objective, element identity and representativeness, direction of load, adopted standard or procedure, apparatus, measurements, loading sequence, stop conditions, acceptance route, interpretation responsibility and relationship to production lots. It should also define how differences in product configuration, ground zone, installation method, equipment, timing or site condition affect the use of the result.
ASTM D1143/D1143M-26 covers static axial compression testing and notes that applying a result to other elements depends on comparable subsurface, element and installation conditions; a qualified engineer controls procedures and interpretation (ASTM D1143/D1143M-26). ASTM D3689/D3689M-25 addresses static axial tensile testing (ASTM D3689/D3689M-25), while ASTM D3966/D3966M-25 addresses static lateral testing and the factors that should be documented for interpretation (ASTM D3966/D3966M-25). These official scope pages do not supply a universal project test load, frequency, hold time or acceptance value. The appointed foundation professional must select and approve the applicable route.

Close the lot with an evidence-based handover
Do not release a lot because the equipment has left the area. Close it when the required evidence is complete, reviewed and assigned an authorized status. The handover dossier should contain the released design and method revisions, setting-out control, product and incoming records, equipment/tool identification, measurement status, pile-by-pile logs, raw data, as-installed survey, inspection results, exception and nonconformance dispositions, test reports, open-item list and signed release.
Use clear states such as installed—awaiting review, held, accepted for stated follow-on work, rework required or rejected. Define what each state permits. A structural team may be allowed to survey or prepare an interface while load-test interpretation remains open, but that limited release must be explicit rather than assumed.
The decision boundary is therefore practical: ground screw pile installation is complete only for the scope that the designated authority has released from actual records. A fast installation without traceability is not a closed foundation decision. A complete log without an approved design and exception route is not enough either. Before mobilization, issue the baseline, equipment and record controls. During work, stop exceptions at named authorities. At handover, reconcile every pile ID, deviation, test and open item to the lot status. Project designers, the site contractor and approving parties retain their assigned responsibilities; a supplier guide cannot approve the foundation.
